Estimates use current (2025) federal tax brackets and standard deductions and assume standard withholding. They don't account for pre-tax deductions, credits, or every state rule, so your actual paycheck may differ. Inside Gusto, these calculations run automatically and exactly on every payroll.

How the Gusto payroll calculator works

This calculator annualizes the gross pay you enter, subtracts the standard deduction for the selected filing status, and applies current federal income tax brackets to estimate withholding. It then adds Social Security (6.2% up to the annual wage base) and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% on high earners), along with any state and local rate you enter, to arrive at estimated take-home pay per paycheck and per year.

What Gusto calculates automatically

When you run payroll in Gusto, you don't do any of this by hand. Gusto pulls each employee's W-4, applies the correct federal, state, and local taxes, handles pre-tax benefit and retirement deductions, and files and pays the taxes for you in all 50 states. See exactly which taxes Gusto handles in our payroll taxes guide.
